Privacy policy
Last updated: October 21, 2026
This policy explains what the Sarerin app and its server at app.sarerin.com collect about you, why, who can see it, and how to delete it. Sarerin is published by Digital Brains LLC.
What we collect
Your account
Your name, your e-mail address and your password. The password is stored only as a secure hash, never as you typed it.
What you choose to add to your profile: your home town, a short bio, the languages you speak, links to Instagram, Telegram, Strava or your website, a profile photo, your gear list and your settings (units, language, privacy). Your profile also shows when you were last active.
What you share
Trail reviews, questions and answers, Trail talk posts, replies and likes, photos with their captions, chat messages in event groups and direct chats, the group hikes you host or join, the members you follow or block, and the reports you send to the moderators. If you apply to become a verified guide, we keep your certificate details for the review. Your notes in the events calendar are private: only you see them.
Recorded hikes
When you are signed in, the hikes you record are uploaded to your account: the GPS track (positions, elevation and times), the distance, the duration and the elevation gain. For each hike you choose who sees it: everyone, your followers, or only you.
Your location
The app uses your location on your phone for the map and for recording. It reaches our server only in these cases:
- The hikes you upload contain their GPS track.
- A safety check-in keeps your last known position while it is armed.
- An SOS sends your position, its accuracy, your battery level and your note.
- A live location link shows your position to whoever has the link, until you stop it or it expires.
- With Trail Radar on, the server knows which trail you are on and counts you anonymously, unless you choose to be visible. This is removed when it expires or when you switch Trail Radar off.
What stays on your phone
Your medical ID and your emergency contacts are kept only on your phone. We never receive them.
Technical data
Like every server, ours sees your IP address. We use it for a short time to limit repeated sign-in attempts and to protect the service, and we keep it with a password reset request. The server also keeps technical logs to find faults and abuse.
How we use it
- To run the app's features, and to show other members what you chose to share.
- For your safety: an SOS or a missed check-in alerts the Sarerin safety team by e-mail, with your name and position, so that they can act. The server does not contact your emergency contacts.
- To moderate: the moderators review the reports members send.
- To e-mail you: a code when you ask to reset your password, that you are going to a group hike, what became of your guide application, and now and then news about Sarerin. Every e-mail but your account's has a link where you choose which ones you get.
Sarerin shows no ads, uses no analytics or tracking tools, and never sells or rents your data.
Other services
The app loads maps and weather forecasts directly from map and weather services (Esri ArcGIS, OpenTopoMap, Mapbox, Open-Meteo, MET Norway and OpenWeatherMap). They receive the area of the map or the place of the forecast and your IP address, but nothing about your account. Links you open, such as directions in Google Maps or a taxi app, take you to those services.
Who sees what
Your public profile shows your name, home town, bio, links, photo, hiking statistics and badges, the group hikes you host, and your latest hikes that you allowed for that viewer. Your e-mail address, gear list, settings and private hikes are never shown to others. Blocking a member hides the two of you from each other everywhere.
How long we keep it, and deleting your account
We keep your data while you have an account. You can delete your account at any time:
- In the app: Profile → Settings → Delete account and all my data.
- On the web: Delete your account
Deleting your account removes at once: your profile, e-mail address and password, your photos, posts and likes, your recorded hikes, follows and blocks, saved trails, calendar notes, settings, guide application, safety check-ins, SOS records, live location links, your Trail Radar presence, and the sign-ins on all your phones.
Some things stay, without your name, so that conversations and trail pages still make sense: your trail reviews, questions and answers keep their text and are shown as written by "Deleted member"; your chat messages and replies are replaced with "[deleted]"; group hikes you hosted in the past stay, and your upcoming ones are cancelled. Reports you sent about others and our security records are kept to handle abuse.
Security
The app talks to our server only over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Passwords and sign-in tokens are stored only as hashes, and photos are checked before they are saved.
